Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes

How do you check if you need an Austrian vignette?
If you plan to travel through Austria soon, it’s advisable to check in advance whether your route includes toll roads. This will allow you to purchase the Austrian vignette if necessary.

To identify toll roads, free roads, or sections subject to specific tolls, consult the relevant map before your departure. This will help you anticipate costs and comply with the requirements imposed by the Austrian authorities.

The map below shows the different types of roads in Austria:

  • Motorways and expressways marked in orange require a vignette.
  • The sections marked in green are subject to a separate special toll.

The Austrian vignette is not mandatory for trailers, towed motorhomes or motorcycle trailers.

Austrian vignette in the country

In Austria, there are over 1,316 physical points of sale where you can buy the vignette or a Go-Box. There are also over 120 points of sale in other countries, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

To view the complete list of points of sale and see their location on a map, it is recommended to check official sources before your departure.

Austrian vignette online

Buying a vignette online is often more convenient than searching for a petrol station or physical point of sale.

However, it’s important to know that online purchases must be made at least 18 days before your entry into Austria. This is due to European legislation, which allows for the cancellation of online purchases within 14 days, a rule also applied by Austria.

Steps to buy a vignette online (vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes):

  • Access the dedicated website;
  • Choose the type of vehicle: car or motorcycle;
  • Select the validity period (10 days, 2 months or 1 year);
  • Fill in the required information: country of registration, license plate number and start date of validity;
  • Please provide an email address to receive payment confirmation;
  • Choose a payment method and complete the purchase.

You can also use the free ASFINAG app available on iOS and Android to purchase your sticker.

These online solutions are simple and convenient for obtaining your vignette before travelling to Austria.

Digital vignette in Austria (special tolls)

The digital vignette is required to travel on certain specific sections of the Austrian motorway network which are subject to a special toll.

This toll applies in particular to the following sections:

  • A9 (Pyhrn motorway) : between Spital/Pyhrn and Adning (Bosruck tunnel), as well as between St. Michael and Übelbach (Gleinalm tunnel);
  • A10 (Tauern motorway) : between Flachau and Rennweg (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels);
  • A11 (Karawanken motorway) : between St. Jakob im Rosental and the border in the Karawanken tunnel;
  • A13 (Brenner motorway) : toll on the entire motorway;
  • S16 (Arlberg expressway) : between St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg.

It is important to note that if you have already paid the toll for one of these sections, you do not need to purchase an additional vignette for that specific section.

Fines for non-payment of the vignette in Austria

For the sticker to be considered valid, it must be correctly affixed and clearly visible. For cars, it is recommended to affix it to the bottom left of the windshield or behind the rearview mirror. Motorcycles must also comply with this visibility rule.

Each year, the sticker changes color, allowing the authorities to quickly verify its validity.

  • Driving without a valid vignette: fine of €120 for cars (€65 for motorcycles) if paid immediately;
  • Incorrectly placed or not visible sticker: €240 fine;
  • Refusal to pay on the spot: fine ranging from €300 to €3,000 after legal proceedings.

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes: GO-Box system

All vehicles with a maximum authorized weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes must pay a kilometre charge called “GO” to travel on motorways and expressways in Austria.

For trucks, buses, or caravans, this toll can only be paid using the GO-Box device , installed on the vehicle’s windshield. This is the only official system recognized by the Austrian authorities.

The GO-Box can be obtained from over 175 retail outlets in Austria. Before setting off, it is essential to check that it is activated and correctly configured to avoid any penalties.

How do I pay the toll in Austria?

Drivers have two payment options with the GO-Box:

  • Deferred payment (post-payment) :
    The device automatically records the kilometers traveled. You then receive an invoice corresponding to the actual road usage and pay it afterward.
  • Advance payment (prepaid) :
    You load funds into your GO-Box in advance via an ASFINAG terminal. The amount is then automatically deducted as you make your journeys.

In both cases, using the GO-Box is mandatory. The only difference lies in the timing of the payment. It is therefore important to choose the most suitable option and ensure your device is active and sufficiently charged before setting out.

Austria Vignette 2026: GO-Box, rules and penalties

You can obtain a GO-Box at all official GO-Maut distribution points. It is recommended to consult the list and map of sales points to find the nearest location.

After purchase, you must declare and validate the vehicle’s emission class within 28 days. To do so, you must send ASFINAG a copy of the vehicle registration document and a CEMT certificate. Failure to comply with this obligation will result in a minimum fine of €240.

Payment methods with the GO-Box

  • Deferred payment (post-payment) :
    This system uses a terminal installed by the driver. Available at all GO-Maut locations, this device costs approximately €5. It allows payment after use, based on the kilometers traveled.
  • Advance payment (prepaid) :
    Ideal for occasional trips, this method allows you to top up the GO-Box in advance, especially with a fuel card.

The minimum top-up amount is €75, while the maximum balance can reach €500 (VAT included).

For more detailed information, it is advisable to consult the official GO-Maut website.

Fines related to the GO-Box in Austria

If the GO-Box is not installed in the vehicle or if the balance is insufficient, a fine of €240 may be applied.

However, in case of insufficient credit, a grace period of 5 hours or 100 km is granted to recharge the account.

In the event of refusal to pay immediately, the matter may be brought before a court, with a fine ranging from €300 to €3,000, depending on the court decision.
