Public holidays in 2026 in Italy

Looking at the calendar for 2026, we immediately discover that the holiday of November 1 falls on a Sunday, which means we miss one of the autumn holidays, while  3 other holidays  fall on  a Saturday  : April 25 (Liberation Day), August 15 (Ferragosto), and December 26 (Boxing Day).

Only one holiday falls on a Friday (  May 1  ), while 3 other holidays fall on a Tuesday (January 6, June 2, and December 8), giving us at least 4 opportunities to treat ourselves to a “long” weekend that can be used for some travel.

Let’s take a closer look at which days  the Italian holidays in 2026 fall on  (non-working holidays, “red” days on the calendar).

What are the public holidays in 2026 in Italy?

In Italy there are 12 recognized holidays, marked in red on the calendar  , which coincide with 12 secular and religious holidays. Here they are listed with the corresponding day of the week.

The first public holiday of the year,  New Year’s Day (January 1, 2026, a public holiday in Italy), falls on a Thursday  , which brings us to the second public holiday of the year, Epiphany  (  or  Befana  ),  on January 6, 2026  , which falls on  a Tuesday  , giving us the opportunity to take advantage of this early part of the year for a very long vacation period, using only a few days off.

Thus, school lessons  are almost certainly due to resume on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 (  with the exception of individual school calendars adopted by individual Italian regions  ).

When are the Italian holidays in 2026?
Easter, April 25 and May 1.

There are no holidays scheduled for us in February and March, except for classic (non-holiday) anniversaries related to  the 2026 carnival  .

We’ll have to wait until early April to find the third holiday of the year.  Easter in 2026  will fall  on Sunday, April 5  (“Mid-Easter”), with the next holiday being  Easter Monday, April 6  .

Thus, the school  holidays  for Easter 2026 should begin on Thursday, April 2, 2026, and end on Tuesday, April 7 (  taking into account the specific school calendars adopted by individual regions of Italy  ).

Right after Easter, we have our first opportunity for a “long weekend” with  the holiday of April 25  (  Liberation Day  ), which falls on  a Saturday  .

But the first real opportunity for a “bridge” is provided by the following  holiday, May 1  (Labor Day), which falls on  a Friday  and can be used to afford 3 days of rest or vacation without using public holidays for those who do not work on Saturday (from Friday May 1 to Sunday May 3).

Summer holidays in Italy in 2026

The holiday  of June 2  (Republic Day and a public holiday in Italy)   falls on  a Tuesday in 2026  , giving us another good opportunity to extend the weekend with just one day off.

Then we move on to August, where, unfortunately, the holiday that symbolizes the peak of summer,  August 15  (Ferragosto), falls on  a Saturday  .

Italian holidays autumn-winter 2026

In the last period of the year, with the exception of September and October, when there are no holidays, we face a classic autumn holiday, represented by the repetition of  November 1  , which in 2026 unfortunately falls on  a Sunday  , which means we will miss one of the holidays of the year.

Then in December comes the next feast of this period: the feast of the Immaculate Conception,  December 8  , which falls on  a Tuesday  (the third feast of the year to coincide with this day) and which can allow us to extend the weekend by a few days.

Finally, the year ends with a festive period represented by  the Christmas holidays,  which are worth noting because they allow you to take advantage of several days off:  December 25, 2026  , Christmas  , in fact, falls on  a Friday  , so  December 26  , Boxing Day, also a holiday, will fall on  a Saturday  , and with the following Sunday, December 27, they form a nice trio of holidays
