Slovakia is one of the EU countries where tolls are required on some sections of highways and roads. If the destination of your trip is one of the winter resorts or a city full of attractions, you should take these costs into account when planning your route. Vignettes are used in Slovakia . Since December 1, 2015, these are electronic vignettes. You can buy them in several ways:

Are you traveling to Slovakia with a car weighing up to 3.5 tons? One vignette is enough for you. You will also have to buy one vignette if you are driving a car with a trailer, and the weight of the road train does not exceed 3.5 tons, the weight of which, together with the weight of the car, exceeds 3 tons.

Tolls in Slovakia
Although some motorways and roads in Slovakia are tolled, the amount of the toll depends on two factors:
- type of vehicle – different rates apply for cars and trucks,
- how long the driver is going to use toll areas.
Tolls are not collected at toll booths (as in Poland) – drivers must purchase a vignette.

Auto equipment in Slovakia
Before leaving for Slovakia, it is worth checking the contents of the trunk. In addition to a first-aid kit , drivers who drive on the roads of Slovakia are required to have the following equipment in their car :
- portable warning triangle,
- reflective vest – it should be in the glove compartment, not in the trunk,
- a spare wheel with a jack and a set of wrenches for removing car wheels.

Slovakia – the most important traffic rules and speed limits
If you are traveling to Slovakia by car, you need to know the local traffic rules. What should be remembered when going to this EU country? Here are the most important rules:
- drivers are required to use low beam headlights all year round,
- the alcohol content in the driver’s blood must be 0.00 ppm,
- Refusal to pass a blood alcohol test is strictly treated – the driver is considered to be in a state of alcohol intoxication,
- winter tires (minimum tread depth of 3 mm) are mandatory when there is a layer of snow or ice on the roads,
- children up to 150 cm tall can be transported only in child seats.
Similar to Poland, the maximum speed in Slovakia depends on the type of road. However, the values are slightly different:
- highway – 130 km/year,
- outside populated areas – 90 km/h,
- in populated areas – 50 km/h.
It is worth controlling the speed at which the vehicle moves, both for safety reasons and for financial reasons. In Slovakia, there are high fines for speeding – up to 800 euros on the spot and up to 1000 euros in court.
