Only the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, which opened at the end of 2018, is toll-free. Since September 2018, the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel has become free.

Toll tunnel in Iceland

The Vaðlaheiði Tunnel is a 7.5 km tunnel on the Ring Road of Iceland, located near the city of Akureyri in northern Iceland. This tunnel is a bypass of the difficult Vikurskard mountain pass, which can be dangerous for drivers in bad weather conditions. The tunnel shortens the route by approximately 16 km, saving drivers up to 12 minutes in good weather conditions.

To pay for a single trip, please visit www.tunnel.is – payment can be made 24 hours before or a maximum of 24 hours after passing through the tunnel.
