Every Austrian license plate begins with the abbreviation of the registration authority and the national coat of arms. Since November 1, 2002, only license plates with the EU symbol have been issued. It is located on the left side of the license plate. Old license plates without this symbol cannot be exchanged, but a voluntary exchange for EU license plates is possible at any time. When changing vehicles, old license plates are replaced with EU license plates in any case.

Austrian license plates consist of black letters on a white background. On the left side is a blue field with a wreath of EU stars and a white letter A (for Austria), followed by the abbreviation of the registration district, then the coat of arms of the federal state and finally the individual prefix.

There are currently around seven million vehicles registered in Austria. Each vehicle has an Austrian license plate, where the first letter or two letters are the abbreviation of the respective registration district. We have listed all the abbreviations and the corresponding registration districts for you. We will also look at all the special license plates, their abbreviations and meanings.
