Driving through Austria often requires more than just buying a motorway vignette. Several important Alpine motorway sections, tunnels and mountain crossings are subject to a separate section toll (Streckenmaut).

For 2026, Austria’s section toll system covers the Brenner motorway, Tauern and Katschberg tunnels, Arlberg tunnel, Karawanken tunnel, and the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels on the Pyhrn motorway.

This guide explains the 2026 toll prices, where the tolls apply, how to pay and whether you also need an Austrian vignette.

A13 Brenner Motorway Toll 2026

The A13 Brenner Autobahn is one of the busiest north–south routes across the Alps. It connects Innsbruck with the Italian border at the Brenner Pass and is widely used by drivers travelling between Austria, Italy and Germany.

Brenner toll price

The toll for the entire A13 Brenner motorway in 2026 is:

€12.50 per single journey.

There is also a €3.50 toll for subsection 2, covering Innsbruck–Patsch/Europa Bridge or Brenner Pass–Nösslach and vice versa.

Importantly, the entire A13 motorway is subject to the section toll.

A10 Tauern and Katschberg Tunnel Toll 2026

The A10 Tauern Autobahn is an important route between Salzburg and Villach and is frequently used by tourists travelling toward southern Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy.

The section toll applies between the Flachau and Rennweg junctions and includes both:

  • Tauern Tunnel
  • Katschberg Tunnel

Tauern toll price

The 2026 price is:

€15.00 for one journey

€30.00 for two journeys

A multi-trip card costs €90.00.

You do not pay separate tolls for the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels when travelling through the complete toll section. They are covered by the A10 section toll ticket.

S16 Arlberg Tunnel Toll 2026

The Arlberg Road Tunnel connects Tyrol with Vorarlberg and forms part of the S16 Arlberg expressway.

The toll section runs between:

St. Anton am Arlberg – Langen am Arlberg

Arlberg tunnel price

For 2026:

One trip: €13.00

Two trips: €26.00

Multi-trip card: €78.00

The toll is charged separately from the normal Austrian motorway vignette system.

A11 Karawanken Tunnel Toll 2026

The Karawanken Tunnel crosses the Austria–Slovenia border and is one of the main road connections between the two countries.

On the Austrian side, the toll section runs from St. Jakob im Rosental to the Slovenian border.

Karawanken tunnel price

The Austrian southbound toll in 2026 is €9.00 for a single trip.

There is an important difference compared with the other Austrian toll tunnels.

ASFINAG sells the ticket for the southbound direction from Austria toward Slovenia. Traffic travelling northbound is tolled by the Slovenian motorway operator DARS.

This is particularly relevant for holiday traffic travelling between Austria and destinations such as Ljubljana, Croatia and the Adriatic coast.

A9 Pyhrn Motorway Tolls 2026

The A9 Pyhrn Autobahn contains two separate toll tunnels:

Bosruck Tunnel

The Bosruck toll section lies between:

Spital am Pyhrn – Ardning

2026 toll:

€14.00 for two trips

Gleinalm Tunnel

The Gleinalm toll section lies between:

St. Michael – Übelbach

€24.00 for two trips

Bosruck + Gleinalm combined

Drivers travelling through both toll sections can purchase a combined A9 ticket.

Two trips: €38.00

A multi-trip card for the A9 costs €80.00.

Do You Need an Austrian Vignette for Toll Tunnels?

This is one of the most confusing parts of the Austrian toll system.

Austria generally requires vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes to have a vignette when using motorways and expressways.

However, special Alpine sections are subject to a separate section toll. ASFINAG confirms that a vignette alone is not sufficient where a section toll applies.

On the actual section-toll stretches, the normal vignette requirement is generally suspended because the section toll is charged instead.

However, you may still need a vignette to reach the toll section using other Austrian motorways.

Example

If you drive from Salzburg toward the A10 Tauern Tunnel, you may use ordinary Austrian motorway sections before reaching the special toll zone.

Therefore:

Section toll ticket ≠ Austrian vignette.

For many journeys through Austria you will need both, even though they cover different motorway sections.

How to Pay Austria Tunnel Tolls

There are two main options.

1. Pay at the toll station

Drivers can use the appropriate toll lanes and pay when reaching the toll station.

2. Buy a Digital Section Toll

The easier option for many international drivers is the Digital Section Toll (Digitale Streckenmaut).

The ticket is linked to your vehicle’s licence plate.

When you approach the toll station, the licence plate recognition system identifies the vehicle and the barrier can open automatically.

Tickets can be purchased through the official ASFINAG Toll Shop.

Digital Section Toll FLEX

ASFINAG also offers Digital Section Toll FLEX.

Instead of buying individual tunnel tickets before every journey, you register:

  • your licence plate;
  • your payment method;
  • your ASFINAG account.

You can then drive through supported section-toll stations, with the applicable toll charged afterwards.

FLEX covers the major section-toll routes including the A13, A10, S16, A11 and A9.

However, activating FLEX does not replace an Austrian vignette for ordinary vignette-required motorways.
