The Brenner Pass is one of the most important road connections between Austria and Italy. Drivers travelling from Innsbruck toward Bolzano, Verona or northern Italy normally use the Austrian A13 Brenner Motorway (Brenner Autobahn).
Unlike most Austrian motorways, the A13 is covered by a special section toll (Streckenmaut). This means drivers have to pay separately to use the Brenner motorway.
According to the official Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG, the 2026 Brenner A13 toll for a passenger car is €12.50 for one trip.
Brenner Pass toll prices in 2026
The current A13 Brenner Motorway prices are:
| Ticket | 2026 price |
|---|---|
| One trip | €12.50 |
| Two trips | €25.00 |
| Multi-trip card | €75.00 |
The one-trip ticket covers one journey in one direction. There is no discount simply for buying a return journey: two trips cost €25.00.
The multi-trip card is primarily useful for motorists who travel across the Brenner Pass regularly.
Do you need an Austrian vignette for the Brenner Pass?
There is an important exception to Austria’s normal vignette rules.
The entire A13 Brenner Motorway is subject to the separate section toll and can be used without an Austrian vignette.
However, this does not necessarily mean you can drive from elsewhere in Austria to the Brenner Pass without a vignette.
For example, if your route uses the A12 Inntal Motorway, the normal Austrian vignette requirement applies there. ASFINAG specifically warns drivers that the vignette obligation applies to the A12 even though the A13 itself uses the section-toll system.
In simple terms:
A13 Brenner Motorway → €12.50 section toll
Other vignette-required Austrian motorways → Austrian vignette may also be required
Therefore, someone driving through Austria toward Italy may need both an Austrian vignette and the Brenner section toll, depending on the route.
How to pay the Brenner toll
There are several ways to pay.
1. Buy the Brenner toll online
The easiest option is to purchase a Digital Section Toll before travelling.
Use the official ASFINAG A13 Brenner Motorway toll shop.
When purchasing a digital ticket, you enter your vehicle’s licence plate number. At the toll station, automatic licence-plate recognition identifies the vehicle and allows you to pass through without making another payment.
A digital single-trip ticket can be used for one journey within one year from the purchase date.
2. Pay at the toll station
Drivers who have not purchased a digital ticket can pay directly when travelling through the Brenner toll station.
The main Brenner toll station is located at Schönberg im Stubaital, south of Innsbruck.
When paying directly at the toll station, you do not need to register a licence plate in advance.
3. Use Digital Section Toll FLEX
Frequent travellers can activate Digital Section Toll FLEX.
You register your licence plate and payment method once. Each journey through an Austrian section-toll station is then automatically charged to the stored payment method.
FLEX supports payment methods including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Amazon Pay.
It can be useful if you regularly travel through Austrian toll sections such as Brenner, Tauern/Katschberg, Arlberg, Bosruck or Gleinalm.
Where is the Brenner toll station?
The A13 Brenner toll station is located at:
Brennerautobahn 4
6141 Schönberg im Stubaital
Austria
It is located approximately south of Innsbruck on the route toward the Italian border.
Can you drive through without stopping?
Yes.
If you have purchased a valid Digital Section Toll, cameras recognise the registered licence plate automatically.
ASFINAG states that motorists with a valid digital section-toll product can use the designated lanes and pass the toll station without stopping.
Drivers should still reduce their speed and follow the lane signs and traffic signals at the toll station.
What about vehicles over 3.5 tonnes?
The €12.50 passenger-vehicle section toll should not be confused with the system for heavy vehicles.
Vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass above 3.5 tonnes generally use Austria’s GO toll system, where charges depend on factors such as kilometres travelled and vehicle characteristics.
This applies particularly to trucks, buses and many heavy motorhomes.
Brenner Pass toll from Austria to Italy
For a normal passenger car travelling from Austria toward Italy on the A13:
Brenner A13 toll in 2026: €12.50 one way.
For a return journey using the same motorway:
€12.50 + €12.50 = €25.00.
Remember that the Austrian section toll covers the A13 motorway, not every toll road you may subsequently use in Italy. Once you continue onto the Italian motorway network, separate Italian motorway tolls can apply.
