How to pay for roads in Turkey
The HGS (Hızlı Geçiç Sistemi) system provides electronic payment of road tolls. The system consists of an HGS sticker that is placed on the windshield or, less commonly, an HGS card that is placed on the dashboard. They are available and can be topped up at PTT post offices, motorway service stations and selected Shell petrol stations.
A sticker or card is assigned to a specific vehicle and is initially loaded with an amount corresponding to the class of the vehicle. The fee is automatically debited from your registered account. If the balance drops to a certain level, the user receives an SMS message about the balance on the account. The HGS system is for registered vehicles only.
If the balance is too low or the vehicle is not equipped with HGS, it is possible to pay for the road online within 15 days after the trip.
