EPC indicator function on VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda

EPC stands for “  Electronic Power Control  ” – this means that this system controls  electronic power regulation.

Many people also refer to the EPC system as an electronic accelerator pedal or “e-gas.”

On most VAG cars, the EPC indicator is located next to the battery symbol on the tachometer display (see image).

If the EPC indicator is on, it means there is  a problem with the electronic accelerator pedal  – as this is an early warning indicator, you do not need to interrupt your journey or stop the vehicle immediately.

Reasons why the EPC indicator becomes visible

If the vehicles are equipped with an electronic accelerator pedal (as in VAG models), the accelerator pedal position is continuously transmitted to the engine control unit via several potentiometers.

So, the throttle valve can be opened or closed on this basis.

An illuminated EPC warning light usually comes on for the following reasons:

  • faulty clutch pedal switch
  • Problems with the accelerator pedal potentiometer
  • throttle valve or throttle valve potentiometer/actuator malfunction
  • broken brake pedal switch or brake light switch
  • Often, a weak battery can also be the cause of the malfunction and cause the EPC indicator to come on.

Can I continue driving even if the EPC indicator is on?

If the EPC light in your VW, Audi, Seat or Skoda is on constantly, you  can usually continue driving  (but only if the car is not jerking too much).

However, the car should be taken to a workshop as soon as possible, as there may be problems with throttle response.

Reading the data using an OBD diagnostic device is also recommended   , as this can help narrow down the search for one of the causes of the error (see above).

Cost of repairing a burnt out EPC lamp

The most important information in advance: if the EPC lamp is on, in most cases the driver  cannot repair the vehicle themselves,  as this is a software or control unit malfunction.

In some cases, an EPC error also requires replacing the accelerator pedal sensor, which can cost 300-400 euros (100-150 euros for part replacement and 150-300 euros for repair).

If this is a standard procedure for repairing an electronic engine (usually after the following error codes:  P0226  ,  P0571  ,  P0703  or  P335A  ), it costs  between 150 and 200 euros depending on the workshop  .
