If you are planning to fly to Montenegro via Podgorica Airport (Golubovci), you will probably need information on how and what to take to get to the city center, as well as how much it will cost. We have prepared an up-to-date detailed description of each method, so you can easily choose the right option for you.

Important information!  We try to publish only verified information, we do not sell services and do not charge for recommendations on our website.

It is worth noting that independent travelers are most often interested in how to get from the airport in Montenegro to Budva, Bar, Petrovac, Ulcinj and other resorts on the Adriatic coast, we will also talk about this in detail in this article.

How to get from Podgorica airport to the city center

Like most airports, Podgorica Golubovci (TGD) is located far from the city center. The distance to the center is approximately 11 km.

Among the available ways to get from Podgorica airport to the center, tourists are offered the following options:

  • taxi (12-15 euros);
  • transfer (15-25 euros);
  • car rental (from 20 euros);
  • train (1.2-2 euros);
  • bus (1.5 – 2.7 euros).

We will tell you more about each type of transport below.

Bus

The bus from Podgorica airport is one of the most affordable ways to get to the city. The only downside is that they don’t run very often, so if you’re in a hurry, it’s better to book a taxi. You can always check the current bus schedule on  the airport website.

The fare varies from 1.5 to 2.7 euros depending on the carrier.

You can buy a bus ticket in advance on  the website  or on the spot (you can directly from the driver).

Some carriers can take you from the airport to Ulcinj (you can also arrange with the drivers to stop in Bar), but most buses only run between the airport and the bus station. At the bus station, you can already call a taxi to take you to your desired destination in the city or buy a bus ticket to your desired city right away.

Train

The railway is by no means the most popular form of transport in Montenegro, but it is definitely one of the cheapest. The cost of a ticket for the Aerodrom-Podgorica train is €1.20 in second class and €2 in first class. There is a 50% discount for students. And if you have already decided to save money, then the railway is quite suitable for you. But you should not expect comfort from this trip.

Aerodrom train station  is about a 20-minute walk from the main entrance to the airport. It is easy enough to find, but the appearance of the station leaves a lot to be desired.

Here we have provided a detailed diagram of how to get to the train station on foot. The route is not difficult, and if you follow the main road from the airport, you will 100% see this station when you reach the bridge, so it will be quite difficult to get lost.

Trains run daily from 6 am to 9 pm, but they don’t always depart at convenient times, so see for yourself whether it’s convenient for you to get there. You can check the current schedule on  the official website of the Montenegrin Railways  , as it can change depending on the time of year.

Taxi

There are always taxis at the exit from the airport. The cost of the trip is fixed, i.e. the standard fare to get from Podgorica airport to the city center is 15 euros (the price is current for 2024-2025) regardless of whether you need to go to the outskirts of the city, the bus station or the center. Therefore, if you are in a hurry, the most convenient option would be to take a taxi on the spot.

Individual transfer to Podgorica

If you like to plan ahead to make sure everything goes smoothly, the best way is to book a private transfer from Podgorica airport. For example, use the KiwiTaxi service or book a car through the Taxi-travel website, which has a fairly good selection of cars and additional options, so the trip will be as comfortable as possible.

You can independently search for services where you can order a transfer from the airport, but this will be a quest.

By the way, check the payment policy. On some sites, you can make a partial payment and give the rest directly to the driver when you arrive at your destination.

Car rental

If you have a driver’s license and at least 2 years of driving experience, you can easily rent a car in Montenegro. This method is practically the most convenient, because the car will be delivered to you immediately at the airport and it will be at your disposal. Since the roads in Montenegro are quite picturesque, you can stop at places you like, enjoy the view and take beautiful photos.

Therefore, if you have the right and desire to drive a car, then feel free to rent a car for the period you need. Montenegro is quite small, so you can return the car in any city.

You can rent a car in Montenegro on the website myrentacar.com. They have the lowest prices (from 20 euros, and in the off-season you can rent a car from 13 euros!) and a small deposit, or even no deposit at all.

The main thing is that the cars are available. Therefore, during the season, we recommend taking care of this in advance.

How to get from Podgorica to Tivat, Budva, Kotor and other cities

There are several ways to get to Montenegrin resorts from Podgorica. In particular, these are:

  • taxi (from 40 euros);
  • transfer (from 30 euros);
  • train (from 2.40 euros);
  • bus (from 5 euros);
  • car rental (from 20 euros);

The cost of transportation will depend on where you are going.

Train

If you want to travel to your destination by train, we dare to disappoint you that the railway is still quite poorly developed in Montenegro due to the mountainous landscape and the high cost of construction. Therefore, by train you can only reach such cities and towns as Bar, Sutomore, Virpazar, Danilovgrad, Nikšić, Kolašin, Mojkovac and Bijelo Polje.

On the coast are Bar, Sutomore and Virpazar. If you want to go to the mountains, then go to Kolašin. It is a ski resort in the north of Montenegro, but even in summer there is something to see there.

Bus

As for buses, the situation is better here, because Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is a transport hub from where you can get to almost anywhere in Montenegro.  The bus station is located  close to the train station, and is also 900 meters from the center, you can get here on foot or directly from the airport.

You can see prices and bus departure times on the official website  busticket4.me  .

Important!  Do not buy tickets online, as you will need to print them out. Electronic versions of tickets are not accepted here and you may simply not be allowed in or be asked to pay for your ticket again, only in cash.

By the way, many bus stations do not have a card payment terminal, so always bring cash with you, preferably in denominations of less than 50 euros, because sometimes cashiers may not have change.

On the website listed above, you can check the bus schedule and ticket prices, but buy the tickets yourself at the bus station, arriving at least 15 minutes before departure.

And one more BUT: add up to 1 euro to the prices on the website. This is the commission of any bus station for issuing tickets. If you see a ticket for 5 euros on the website, then at the bus station it will cost 5.5-6. And if you are traveling with a suitcase, then be prepared to pay 1 euro for each piece of luggage. That is, if you have two suitcases, then add another 2 euros to the cost. But this is paid at the ticket office of the station, and directly from the carrier. You can take hand luggage inside for free, but for everything that is put in the trunk, you will have to pay extra.

Taxi/transfer/car rental

You can also rent a car in Podgorica right at the airport and go to the city you need. Since Montenegro is quite small, you will spend no more than 4 hours on the road if you drive slowly to the furthest point. The distance from Podgorica airport to resort towns does not exceed 110 km, so you can easily and quickly get to the desired point.

You can check the cost of a transfer from Podgorica airport to Budva, Tivat, Kotor, Ulcinj and other cities on this website.

We hope this article was useful for you and helped you better understand the features of transfers from the airport of the capital of Montenegro.
