Car license plates in Finland

The car license plate has a registration number in black letters on a white background. The car registration number usually consists of a combination of three letters and a three-digit (less often 1-2-digit) number. The series of letters and numbers are separated by a hyphen. In addition to the actual registration number, the EU symbol is placed on the left side of the EU plate on a blue background, and below it is the nationality symbol FIN.

Older cars may still have the black license plates they originally received. If the car has white license plates, they can be replaced with black ones if the registration number it previously had was on black plates, the previous license plate was not assigned to another vehicle, and information about the car’s previous license plate can be found in the Traf information system.

License plates in Finland for motorcycles

On a motorcycle license plate, the registration number is also in black letters on a white background, but the type of letters is different. Until the fall of 2008, the codes consisted of a combination of two or three letters and a maximum of three digits, but since then motorcycles have been assigned a maximum of three digits and 2-3 letters as a registration code. On a motorcycle license plate, the series of letters and numbers are arranged in two different rows. If it is an EU plate, only two characters can fit in the top row.

Until 1974, motorcycle registration plates were white letters on a black background. Both single- and double-line plates with a black background are available. You can still get a black plate for a motorcycle if it is a motorcycle manufactured before 1974 or a motorcycle manufactured before 1972 imported from abroad. Museum motorcycle plates also have a black background.

Moped and moped license plates are similar to motorcycle license plates, but they are smaller in size, have the same font as car license plates, and lack an EU identification number. In the fall of 2008, they underwent the same changes as motorcycle plates.

Snowmobile license plates are the same size as moped license plates, but have a yellow background. The top row has a maximum of three digits, and the bottom row has 2-3 letters.
