If you are planning to drive on Austrian motorways and expressways in 2026, you will usually need an Austria vignette. The vignette is mandatory for motorcycles, cars and other vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of up to 3.5 tonnes.

Austria offers four vignette periods in 2026: 1 day, 10 days, 2 months and 1 year. The 1-day vignette is available only in digital form.

Digital Vignette or Sticker?

In 2026, drivers can still choose between a traditional adhesive toll sticker and a digital vignette for most validity periods.

The 1-day vignette is digital only.

Importantly, 2026 is the final year of Austria’s adhesive vignette. According to ASFINAG, from 2027 the vignette system will be fully digital.

The price is the same whether you choose an adhesive or digital vignette.

Where to Buy the Austria Vignette

The safest option is to purchase the digital vignette directly from the official ASFINAG toll shop.

Digital vignettes are also available through the ASFINAG app and authorised sales partners. Traditional stickers are sold at thousands of authorised outlets in Austria and abroad.

Important 18-Day Rule for Digital Vignettes

Tourists buying a digital vignette online should pay particular attention to its starting date.

When a private consumer purchases a 2-month or annual digital vignette online directly from ASFINAG, it normally cannot become valid until the 18th day after purchase because of consumer withdrawal rules.

This restriction does not apply to:

  • 1-day digital vignettes;
  • 10-day digital vignettes;
  • business customers;
  • digital vignettes purchased through certain physical sales outlets, toll stations or vending machines.

Therefore, a 1-day or 10-day digital vignette can be purchased for immediate use.

How Long Is the 2026 Annual Vignette Valid?

The 2026 Austrian annual vignette is valid from:

1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027

This gives the annual vignette a maximum validity period of 14 months.

Do I Need a Vignette Everywhere in Austria?

No. Although the vignette is required on most Austrian motorways and expressways, there are exceptions.

There are also special section toll roads where a separate toll is charged. These include sections such as the Brenner, Arlberg, Tauern/Katschberg, Karawanken, Bosruck and Gleinalm routes.

Austria also has several motorway sections where a vignette is not required, including certain stretches near the borders at Kufstein, Salzburg and Hörbranz.
