In Croatia, the road network is almost one and a half thousand kilometers. The photo below presents a map of highways with their markings (you will find markings from A1 to A11).  There is a system of toll highways  , and some of them pass through border points, such as Slovenia or Hungary.

Motorway tolls in Croatia

Motorway tolls, as in Poland,  are collected at toll booths.  Payment is made by card or cash – in euros or kuna. You can also use the ENC system, which is something like the Polish equivalent of VIATOOL.

The size of the commission depends on three factors:

  • the length  of the traveled section of the road,
  • season  (in the summer season, tolls on highways are slightly higher than in the off-season),
  • vehicle category  (passenger car up to 3.5 tons belongs to the 1st category).

The amount of the toll is an example of the cost of highways

It is difficult to determine exactly how much a motorway toll will cost, but it can be estimated using online calculators. Below we give examples of prices for travel on the given roads:

Are vignettes required in Croatia?

No, there are no vignettes in Croatia  . So you don’t have to worry about buying it when crossing Croatian borders. However, it should be remembered that, heading to this magical country, we cross the borders of other countries.

Are vignettes valid in the countries en route to Croatia?

Yes, vignettes are valid, in particular, in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. Going to Croatia, we will cross the border of one of the above-mentioned countries. Vignettes can be purchased, for example, at some gas stations, but it is most convenient to do it online, choosing a verified site. We recommend doing this before the trip, because we are required to have them when crossing the border, and the fines for not having a vignette are large.
