How to diagnose an error?
Diagnostics of Honda car systems can be performed by two methods – self-testing and checking using a computer. The second option allows you to give more accurate results due to the recommendations given by the manufacturer for eliminating the problem. But to implement this method you will need a scanner or a computer with special software.
Self-diagnosis is carried out using the diagnostic connector:
- A metal bracket, paper clip, or wire is being prepared, with which the contact elements on the block will be closed.
- The element is installed on the diagnostic connector. The clamp should close the contacts on the block under numbers 4 and 9. The ignition should be turned off at the time of performing this action.
- The key is inserted into the lock and turned to activate the ignition system.
- After that, the process of testing the car’s systems will begin, at which point the car owner should monitor the dashboard. The ABS, SRS, Check Engine, etc. lights will start flashing on the combination. It should be remembered that the light bulb counts down decimals by giving a long signal, and units by a short one. For example, the combination 17 is transmitted by one long flicker of the LED element and seven short blinks. During this task, the driver must not press the brake pedal, as this will affect the reading of error codes in the operation of the anti-lock braking system.
- All combinations are recorded and then decoded. After the diagnostics are completed, the ignition in the car is turned off.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
Depending on the vehicle model, other contacts may need to be shorted on the diagnostic connector. To find the necessary connector elements, you will need a low-power indicator with connected wires.
The procedure is performed as follows:
- One cable connected to the LED is connected to ground, that is, any standard bolt screwed into the body.
- The ignition system is activated. The user then uses the second wire connected to the LED lamp to find the contact on the block.
- If the desired contact element is found, then after twisting it, the Check light will light up on the control combination.
Possible locations of diagnostic pads in Honda cars:
- under the right end of the center console, next to the front passenger’s right foot;
- under the interior trim in the area of the front passenger’s feet, the connector is hidden by a green cover;
- in the area of the driver’s right leg;
- behind a special pad near the passenger’s left leg;
- in the center console under the ashtray;
- under the mat in the front passenger’s footwell in the passenger compartment;
- inside the plastic casing of the center console;
- behind the left dashboard wall on right-hand drive cars;
- behind the glove compartment, to gain access you need to dismantle the glove box.
How to reset the error?
Resetting fault codes in the EPS system is done as follows:
- The contact elements used for self-diagnosis are closed. The procedure is performed using a wire or paper clip.
- The key is inserted into the lock, after which the steering wheel is turned to the left as far as it will go. This is necessary in order to turn the wheels to the extreme left position. The steering wheel must then be held in the same position.
- The key is turned in the lock to activate the ignition system. The driver must wait 4 seconds, after which the EMF fault LED indicator on the instrument panel should go out.
- Within the next 4 seconds, the driver returns the steering wheel to the center position. The EPS system light should turn on again on the instrument panel.
- Within the next 4 seconds, the driver must turn the wheels all the way to the left. They must be held in this position until the EPS indicator disappears from the instrument cluster.
- Then the steering wheel of the car is turned back to the middle position. 4 seconds later, the EPS indicator will give a double signal, indicating the successful deletion of error codes from the on-board computer memory.
- Within the next five seconds, the system should automatically learn the new average steering wheel position. If this procedure is successful, the EPS indicator will blink three times.
- The ignition system is switched off. The jumper is removed from the diagnostic terminal. The ignition must then be switched on again to ensure that there are no errors. If the EPS indicator light remains on, the DTC clearing process must be repeated.
To remove combinations of errors in the operation of the ABS system, the following actions are performed (the procedure is considered using the Odyssey and CRV RD1 models as an example):
- A jumper is inserted into the diagnostic connector. You must use contact elements 4 and 9, with which the car was tested.
- In a car, the brake pedal is depressed, but not with any additional pressure. It should be held in this position.
- The key is turned in the lock to activate the ignition system. The car owner must wait until the anti-lock brake system icon disappears from the instrument cluster. This takes about 2-3 seconds.
- After the light indicator is activated, the driver can release the brake pedal. After a few seconds, the anti-lock brake light will be activated again. After it is activated, the user should quickly press the accelerator and wait four seconds. After that, the light indicator should go out again.
- Then the pedal is released. 4 seconds after this, the ABS indicator should flash twice briefly. If this happens, the fault combinations have been successfully deleted from the control unit’s memory. Then the ignition system is switched off, and if the jumper is removed from the diagnostic connector.
If you need to remove errors about the VSA system operation, the user must perform the following actions:
- The contact elements used to check the vehicle are closed on the diagnostic block.
- The key is inserted into the lock, but the ignition does not need to be turned on yet. The user needs to release the parking brake.
- Then the brake pedal is pressed, but not fully depressed. It should be held in this position until the end of the code reset process.
- The key is turned in the lock to activate the ignition system. The car owner must wait until the ABS indicator light on the instrument panel goes out.
- After the anti-lock brake light goes off, the user fully applies the parking brake. It is recommended to press the handbrake button and hold it. Holding this button down will cause the parking brake to quickly lower and then raise again.
- If the steps described in the manual are performed correctly, the VSA or ABS indicator light will blink twice. This indicates that the fault codes have been successfully erased. The ignition system is then turned off and the jumper removed from the diagnostic connector.
GOOD TO KNOW
The procedure for clearing error codes for right-hand drive and left-hand drive vehicles is similar. The only difference may be the location of the diagnostic connector block.
To clear SRS safety system trouble codes, perform the following steps:
- The glove box body is dismantled in the area of the driver’s left or right knee, it all depends on the location of the steering wheel. Behind the cover is a block with safety elements.
- In the module, a yellow pad with two contact elements is searched. This connector is usually located deep in the block. The contacts on this output must be closed with a paper clip or wire.
- The key is turned in the lock to activate the ignition system.
- The SRS indicator light will illuminate for six seconds and then turn off. If it turns off, the user has four seconds to open the jumpered contacts.
- Then the SRS light will be activated again. Within the next four seconds, the user must close the contacts on the block. The light will turn off and within the next 4 seconds, the user must open the pins on the connector. After that, the light should give a double light signal.
- The ignition is turned off. If you need to travel immediately, the system should not be activated again until 20 seconds have passed.
Another way to erase any error in the operation of a Honda car:
- The key in the ignition switch is turned to the “OFF” position.
- The user presses and holds the “Auto” button, as well as the windshield heating activation button. At this point, the key must be turned to the On position.
- The windshield heating system icon will start flashing for the next five seconds. After that, the error combinations should be deleted from the control unit’s memory.
You can clear error codes by disconnecting the battery terminals. However, in this case, it should be noted that the reset will occur if the combinations were random. You can also use a diagnostic scanner or a computer with the appropriate software used for diagnostics to clear the memory. The utility should have a special section for clearing errors.
